FBSO’S season-long patriotic theme continues with the annual children’s concert, Saturday, April 7, at 2pm at the George Memorial Library in Richmond. In
“This Land is Made for You and Me”, attendees will enjoy traditional American folk songs from all corners of our great nation. The concert is free of charge, and there are no tickets required.
Most of the music will be familiar to children, including folk songs from our American heritage, “Oh, Susannah”, “America the Beautiful” and songs from Stephen Foster. We’ll also salute our Texas heritage, with “The Yellow Rose of Texas” and “Texas, Our Texas”. There will be a few ballads and slow melodies, such as “Shenandoah”, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and “We Shall Overcome”.
We’ll have our young audience singing and dancing along with the music throughout the performance with the “Pops Hoe-Down”, “Ham and Eggs” and the “International Dixieland Jamboree”. Following a simple sign language lesson, the audience will both sing and sign the finale, “This Land is Your Land”.
FBSO will hold an instrument petting zoo following the performance. Other activities are being planned for the day; please check the website for more details.
Children of all ages are welcome to attend. This is an entertaining, family activity – and a great way to foster a young child’s love of music, while honoring our American heritage.
