Meet the Artists: Gwendolyn D. Alfred

Soprano Gwendolyn D. Alfred is a native of Port Arthur, TX. She recently made her Houston Grand Opera debut as the title role of the newly-commissioned chamber opera, What Wings They Were: The Case of Emeline.Alfred‘s recent concert work includes solo debuts with the Houston Symphony (Madama Butterfly and Porgy and Bess) and the Houston Civic Symphony (Beethoven’s Ninth). Prior to this, Alfred sang the role of Ms. Gobineau in Menotti’s The Medium at Opera in the Heights. She also covered Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) at the Miami Summer Music Festival, where she was one of few sopranos chosen to perform for the Christine Goerke Master Class. A notable singer at the Moores Opera Center, her featured roles include Giulietta (Les Contes D’Hoffmann), Magda (The Consul), Contessa Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), Madama Cortese (Il Viaggio a Reims), Cinna (Lucio Silla), and Maria Corona (The Saint of Bleecker Street). Alfred is an Assistant Professor of Voice at Texas Southern University where she skillfully maintains a studio of undergraduate voice majors and teaches upper-level core music courses.
